A bettor made nearly half a million dollars on the ouster of Nicolás Maduro just before it was officially announced, sparking debate about the possibility of profiting from confidential information of the event.

Market Movement in Wagers

Wagers on Polymarket, an online prediction market, that the Venezuelan president would be removed from office by the month's conclusion surged in the time leading up to former President Trump stated on January 3rd that Maduro had been taken into custody.

A single trader, which became a member last month and made four bets, all on Venezuela, earned over $436,000 from a initial bet of $32.5K.

The identity is unknown. The anonymous account had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.

Odds Fluctuate Before News Break

Trading information shows that traders assessed the probability of Maduro's exit at just under 7% in the afternoon of Friday, January 2nd.

But these probabilities had jumped to 11% by shortly before midnight and skyrocketed in the first hours of Saturday, pointing to a rapid movement in betting activity just before the social media post was made.

"That trade has all the characteristics of a trade based on confidential knowledge," commented an industry expert.

Several of other platform users also profited large payouts from bets on the same outcome.

Political Attention Intensifies

Politicians are beginning to pay attention.

Proposed legislation presented on Monday aims to prohibit federal workers from making trades on prediction markets if they have "insider details" related to a bet.

Market Background

Prediction markets have surged in popularity in recent years, with users able to bet on everything from sports to politics.

The industry faced scrutiny under the Biden administration. However it has experienced less resistance during the present political climate.

Using confidential knowledge is a crime in the traditional financial markets, but there are fewer regulations in the event betting space.

An official representative for Kalshi said their site "has clear rules against insider trading of any form."
