Arrangements for Putin-Trump Talks Shelved Days Following Hungarian Capital Negotiations Proposed

Currently exist "no arrangements" for US President President Trump to confer with Russian President Vladimir Putin "in the immediate future", a administration representative has declared.

Recently Trump indicated he and the Kremlin leader would hold talks in Hungary's capital within two weeks to address the war in Ukraine.

A planning session between US Secretary of State Secretary Rubio and his Russian counterpart Foreign Minister Lavrov was due to be held this week - but the White House stated the two had had a "constructive" conversation and that a face-to-face session was not "required".

The administration declined to provide any more details on why the talks had been postponed.

Previous Developments

Trump had discussed a Hungarian meeting during a call with the Russian leader, a just prior to hosting Ukraine's President Zelensky in the Oval Office.

Some reports indicated his talks with Zelensky had been a "shouting match", with sources claiming Trump had pressured him to give up significant territories of Ukraine's east as part of a settlement with Russia.

Nevertheless, on this week Trump endorsed a peace initiative endorsed by Kyiv and EU officials to halt the war on the present positions.

"Let it be cut in its current state," he said.

Moscow has repeatedly pushed back against pausing the current line of contact.

Moscow was only interested in "long-term, sustainable peace", Russia's foreign minister commented on this week, indicating that halting hostilities would simply constitute a temporary ceasefire.

Diplomatic Positions

The "underlying reasons" of the hostilities required resolution, the Russian diplomat emphasized, using Moscow's terminology for a set of maximalist demands that include the recognition of full Russian sovereignty over the Donbas as well as the disarmament of the country – a unacceptable proposition for Kyiv and its Western allies.

The Ukrainian president said discussions about the front line were the "commencement of dialogue" but that Moscow was "taking all measures" to prevent dialogue.

He additionally stated the exclusive issue that could cause Russia to "become engaged" was that of the supply of distance-capable munitions to the Ukrainian military.

Military Considerations

Putin's unplanned conversation with Trump recently came ahead of rumors that the US was planning to provide long-range Tomahawk missiles to Ukrainian forces that could potentially strike inside Russia.

Zelensky stated it was the missile discussion that had pressured the Kremlin to participate in talks. The discussion regarding the weapons systems had emerged as a "significant input" in diplomacy", he remarked.
