The British designer Antony Price, the influential style architect who crafted some of the most iconic looks worn by artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has sadly died aged 80.

He was celebrated for his defined forms and theatrical styles, such as the light-hued ensembles that featured in the iconic band Duran Duran's classic music video for "their hit Rio".

"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement online."

His passing follows less than a month after he debuted his most recent collection in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. The performer Lily Allen modelled a dress inspired by the notorious black velvet "dress" historically worn by Diana, Princess of Wales.

A Lasting Legacy

Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price headed for London in the early 1960s to attend the esteemed Royal College of Art.

A year after graduating, he began designing clothing for men at Stirling Copper and was responsible for the tight, button-detailed trousers that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger sported during the iconic group's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.

He established his eponymous line in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show opened with looks from the famed model Jerry Hall, who also wore the bridal gown Price created for her for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.

Working with Legends

A long-time collaborator of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price created the iconic jacket the star wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His signature ability to fuse tailoring for all genders along with his expert craftsmanship in crafting body-hugging looks cemented his status as a "genuine original," according to the British Fashion Council.

During the nineties, he began working on ensembles for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, including a number of outfits for her tour of the United States after becoming Duchess.

After a career spanning over fifty years, Price presented his final runway show in London just last month in collaboration with the fashion brand 16Arlington.

  • Sculpted Silhouettes: The core of his aesthetic.
  • Dramatic Impact: Shaping the look of rock and pop.
  • Boundary-Pushing Tailoring: Creating a unique, androgynous style.
  • A Client List from Rock to Royalty: Spanning iconic musicians and members of the royal family.

Design circles laments the passing to a genuine innovator whose influence on style and culture remains indelibly etched.
