Democrats Denounce Trump After He States They Should Face Execution
Lawmakers from the Democratic party voiced fury after the ex-president charged a group of Democratic congress members of being "traitors" and asserted they should be arrested and punished "through capital punishment" following their release of a contentious video.
The Message That Triggered the Debate
The clip, shared on earlier this week, features six Democratic congress members who previously served in defense or defense capacities.
"Similar to us, you all took an oath to protect and defend this constitution," the representatives declared in the 90-second video. "And right now, the dangers to our governing document don't only come from overseas, but from within our own country. Our laws are clear, you can refuse unlawful commands, you can decline unlawful commands, you should decline illegal orders. No one has to follow directives that violate the legal system or our national charter."
Donald Trump's Incensed Reply
The recorded statement seemed to provoke a furious response from the ex-president.
On Thursday morning, Trump published on Truth Social: "It's called SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these betrayers to our United States should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In a separate publication, he declared: "This constitutes really serious, and Harmful to our United States. Their statements cannot be allowed to remain. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a subsequent publication, he continued: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, subject to punishment by DEATH!" He also reposted a declaration that read: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Opposition Officials Respond
Following Trump's remarks on that day, Top Democrats released a unified statement censuring the comments.
"Partisan aggression has no role in the United States," they stated. "Representatives who participated in the video all served our nation with exceptional loyalty and excellence. We clearly denounce Donald Trump's appalling and risky death threats against members of Congress, and appeal to House Republicans to vigorously do the same."
The party representatives also stated that they had been in touch with law enforcement "to ensure the protection of these officials and their families."
"Donald Trump must right away remove these radical online messages and retract his dangerous discourse before he causes harm," the declaration continued.
Lawmakers' Firm Answer
The officials who appeared in the video also published a declaration.
"We serve as former service members and defense specialists who love this United States and made an pledge to protect and support the founding document of the United States," they declared. "That oath continues forever, and we plan to maintain it. No warning, coercion, or promotion of aggression will prevent us from that sacred responsibility."
"The most revealing aspect is that the president views it punishable by capital punishment for us to repeat the law," they added. "Military personnel should understand that we have their support as they carry out their pledge to the constitution and duty to follow only proper directives. It is not only the proper thing to do, but also our responsibility."
They stated: "The entire nation must join forces and denounce the president's requests for our death and ideological conflict. This is a moment for ethical certainty."
Additional Partisan Responses
The Opposition leader also condemned Trump's statements and published on social media: "We must be absolutely clear: the ex-commander in chief is calling for the death of elected officials."
He continued: "This constitutes an outright THREAT. Every Senator, all representatives, every American – without partisan consideration – should denounce this right away and absolutely."
The Conservative official supported Trump's assertion that the Democrats had been involved in "rebellion", describing the video as "wildly inappropriate", commenting: "This represents very dangerous, you have leading members of Congress instructing soldiers to ignore directives, I think that's historic in the nation's past."
The Conservative representative also reportedly stated to journalists that in what he reviewed of Trump's messages, Trump was "explaining the violation of sedition" but that "legal experts have to analyze the terminology and determine all that."
Administration Statement
During a executive branch meeting on Thursday afternoon, when asked by a media member, "Would the president want to execute congressional representatives?", the executive branch representative answered: "No."
"We should understand about what the president is reacting to," the representative declared. "You have sitting members of the federal government who conspired to arrange a digital communication to members of the national defense, to active duty service members advising them to defy the commander in chief's legal commands."
She stated: "The integrity of our defense system rests on the hierarchy, and if that chain of command is violated, it can cause casualties, it can lead to disorder, and that is exactly what these members of Congress ... are fundamentally promoting."
