Jets Coach Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After NYC Shooting
New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he has been in contact with cornerback Kris Boyd and is confident the player will recover well after being shot in central New York in the early hours of Sunday.
Glenn described that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “positive” during a recent discussion.
“That gives me comfort, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His wife and child, they’re in good spirits and he is expected to recover fully.”
Glenn was unsure when Boyd might be released the medical facility, where he is reported as in critical but steady condition.
“Not certain at the moment,” the coach said. “But I will say this, from our conversation, his attitude was encouraging. Furthermore, that’s what gives me comfort, because of his outlook and he expresses himself so positively.”
New York police shared video stills earlier this week of an individual wanted in the attack on the player. The reason behind the incident is currently under review and officials stated it is unknown if Boyd was targeted. No one else was hurt according to reports.
The attack took place around 2 a.m. on Sunday near MSG and Times Square. Boyd, 29, was transported to Bellevue Hospital after suffering a wound to the stomach, police said. The perpetrator got away.
Glenn shared Boyd has been on his mind “constantly” since he heard about the shooting. Glenn added that Boyd and his wife just had a baby.
“The first thing I thought about, he recently became a father,” Glenn said. “My mind went to his family, considering his child and my priority is his well-being. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“There’s a process to this, which I won’t get into, but I’m happy at the fact that he will recover excellently.”
Boyd was inactive in the present campaign, his debut year with New York, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on 18 August with a shoulder injury that needed an operation.
Boyd came to New York as a free agent in March and was anticipated to become an important component of an improved special teams group under the coach and special teams coordinator the special teams coach. But Boyd was injured during preseason drills on early August and was carted from the field.
Boyd continued to be present all season long while healing from his surgery.
“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn commented. “In fact, he is a regular at our matches. He’s fully engaged. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”
Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, began his career with the Vikings after his selection in the later rounds by Minnesota out of UT in the 2019 draft. He later played for Arizona in 2023 and then joined Houston’s practice squad subsequently. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal for $1.6 million with New York in the spring.
