New York City Mayor Eric Adams Plans to Back Former Governor Andrew Cuomo in New York City Mayoral Race

NYC's current mayor Mayor Adams has announced his plan to support Andrew Cuomo in the forthcoming election for mayor, despite an extended period of disagreements between the two Democratic figures.

A Surprising Reversal After Previous Accusations

Just last month, the mayor had publicly condemned the former governor, labeling him a “snake and a untruthful person” and alleging of having “a career of pushing Black candidates out of races.” However, in a new statement, Adams made a U-turn, announcing he now intends to campaign alongside Cuomo in communities where he holds significant backing.

“It is crucial to mobilize the communities of color that have experienced urban displacement on how important this election is,” the mayor stated.

He added, “They have watched their housing costs rise due to gentrification and they have been disregarded in those neighborhoods, and I plan to visit to those communities and speak one on one with organizers and groups and I will appear with the governor in those neighborhoods and get them involved.”

Election Landscape and Recent Events

The election battle has so far been dominated by the struggle between Cuomo and progressive candidate his main rival, whose growing support has drawn interest globally and symbolized hopes for a rejuvenated progressive wing of the Democrats.

In a latest mayoral debate, both the democratic socialist and GOP candidate Curtis Sliwa stated they would reject the mayor's support if extended.

Earlier this year, Adams had launched his re-election campaign as an independent after being indicted on federal corruption charges which were later dropped in return for his assistance with government enforcement actions across the city.

At an separate media briefing on Thursday, Adams answered journalists asking about the endorsement plan by stating, “I’ll be with Andrew later today.”

The announcement came a day after the two politicians were spotted sitting courtside together at the the NBA team's season opener at the famous arena, which occurred right after a heated candidate debate.
