New York's next mayor confirms plans to make his home in the storied Gracie Mansion
New York City's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, has decided to live in the iconic Gracie Mansion, leaving behind the affordable apartment that was a central issue throughout his run for office.
A Historic Residence
Constructed in 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the mayoral home for nearly all New York City mayors after the mid-20th century.
But, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a key platform, did not confirm his residency plans promptly following his electoral win in November.
"The choice rested on keeping my family safe and the imperative to dedicating my full attention on carrying out the affordability agenda the city's residents elected me on," stated Mamdani in a statement.
A Fond Farewell
He resided in the Astoria neighbourhood, a district known for its diverse immigrant communities and culinary diversity.
"To my neighbors in Astoria: thank you for showing us what is great about New York City," he expressed.
"Even though I'm moving in Astoria, Astoria will continue to reside within me and my efforts as mayor," he said.
Campaign Controversy
In his campaign, Mamdani tied his key pledge – halting rent increases – to his own housing situation.
However his opponents, most notably former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for living in the apartment even though he came from a well-known family.
Not All Mayors Stayed
Some mayors have decided to stay at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire entrepreneur, kept his residence in his personal mansion on the Upper East Side for his tenure, which ended in 2012.
In his view, Bloomberg felt it could serve as a venue for official events, and advocated for significant upgrades of the older mansion.
A Stately Residence
When Mamdani moves into Gracie Mansion sometime around his inauguration on 1 January, he will be surrounded by surroundings very different than his previous Astoria home.
With its butter yellow paint, emerald shutters, and white railings, Gracie Mansion is an ornate structure overlooking the East River.
Internally, the first floor of the historically styled mansion is furnished to reflect the home's original era.
The estate, which allegedly has five bedrooms, also includes fortified protections to safeguard the mayor and his family.
Ghostly Tales
Some residents have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has supernatural lodgers.
Chirlane McCray, the spouse of former mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that they experienced doors opening and closing inexplicably, and the floors emitted odd sounds.
Former Mayor Eric Adams was more certain. "No matter what people claim," he declared in 2022. "There are ghosts in there, man."
The Value of Rent Stabilization
Mamdani's current apartment is rent-stabilized, meaning the city regulates on how much property owners can hike the monthly cost each year.
Tenants consider these apartments crucial resources as the housing expenses outpaces the means of many residents.
Records showed Mamdani paid about $2,300 each month for his apartment.
Per figures from the property website Zillow, the median rent for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
