The beloved police drama Line of Duty will make a comeback for its seventh season, announced by the BBC.

A brand new six-part season created by Jed Mercurio starts production in Northern Ireland this spring, according to the network.

The actress expressed excitement about the return, saying she was "thrilled" about the series' return. Adrian Dunbar remarked, "How wonderful it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming together next year."

The last season concluded in 2021 with a final episode that drew in more than 17 million viewers. Speculation about a potential return have been circulating for some time, but official word only arrived this week.

Fresh Obstacles for The Team

Series seven begins with the anti-corruption unit having been disbanded and renamed as the new police oversight body, according to production details.

Steve Arnott, Vicky McClure's role, and Ted Hastings remain working to tackle misconduct within the police force.

Their work "has never been more difficult", and under these circumstances, these officers will take on their "most sensitive case so far."

New Character and Complex Case

An additional officer, DI Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charming officer celebrated for busts of criminal networks, is accused of misusing his authority to become a offender.

Yet, his case could be a deliberate distraction from a larger danger still operating in the shadows, the teaser suggested.

Speaking about the renewal, Jed Mercurio said: "Everyone involved feels enormous gratitude to the dedicated viewers."

"It's an honor to have had so many followers watch the ups and downs of the unit over six previous seasons and we are thrilled to be coming back for a new installment."

He added: "Corruption in the UK is supposed to have ended while the series was off air, so I've been forced to use my creativity."

Cast Reactions

The Scottish actor described appearing in the police drama as "a job of a lifetime".

"Not only the show's success but the people I've worked with I now call dear friends."

"I can't wait to wear the uniform again and reunite with everyone," he said.

Vicky McClure stated: "Obviously I'm so excited Line of Duty is returning! Can't wait to work with Jed, Compston and Dunbar again. The city, we'll be there shortly!"

The veteran actor noted: "As we count down the AC-12 days of Christmas, how exciting it is to know that the Three Amigos will be working together next year."

"Delighted with the announcement and looking forward to those unexpected twists and turns."

Series Legacy

Line of Duty launched in the early 2010s and became one of the most popular television series of the last decade, featuring guest stars such as Kelly Macdonald.

Broadcasters has not yet announced exactly the new season will premiere.

The conclusion of series six drew the extended plot about the hunt for criminal mastermind known as "H" to a close, and the creative team said at the moment there were no intentions for further series.

Nevertheless, the corporation announced on this week that a new season is now in development.
