The Japanese Economy Contracts as Exports Face Impact by American Tariffs
The Japanese economic system has shown a drop for the initial time in six quarters, mainly driven by falling overseas shipments as a result of recent American tariffs.
Group of Seven Economic Rankings
Japan stands as the first Group of Seven country to announce an economic contraction in the most recent three-month period.
With the US yet to release its gross domestic product data for Q3 2025, the current G7 growth standings show:
- The French economy: +0.5% expansion
- United Kingdom: 0.1 percent
- Canada: 0.1 percent (preliminary figure)
- Germany: 0%
- Italian economy: 0%
- Japanese economy: negative 0.4 percent
Tourism Shares Slump during Diplomatic Rift with Beijing
In addition to the GDP decline, Japan is facing an intensifying political tension with China concerning Taiwan.
Stocks in Japanese travel and retail companies have declined sharply after China recommended its nationals to avoid visiting to Japan.
This action by Beijing heightened a diplomatic feud that was initiated by remarks from Tokyo's recently appointed PM about the possibility of sending forces in the event of a potential Chinese invasion on Taiwan.
The development led to a surge of selling across Japanese tourism-related shares.
- Oriental Land shares fell by 5.7%
- Isetan Mitsukoshi plummeted by 11.3 percent
- Japan Airlines declined by 3.75%
"The China-Japan dispute over Taiwan and Beijing's travel warning advising against travel to Japan creates near-term headwinds for consumer-facing sectors.
"Chinese visitors represent roughly 25% of Japan's inbound traffic, making retail outlets, high-end shopping, and hospitality particularly vulnerable."
Economic Decline Details
Japan's GDP dropped by 0.4% in the July-September quarter, as manufacturers' overseas shipments were hit by duties imposed by the United States this year.
Overseas shipments were a key driver of the decline, falling by 1.2 percent compared with the previous quarter, and were 4.5% lower than a year ago.
Previously, the American government had proposed Japan with a new 25% tariff on its products, which was later lowered to 15% when the two countries reached a trade deal.
Private demand also fell, by 0.3 percent compared to the previous quarter.
On an annualized basis, Japan's real gross domestic product shrank by 1.8% in the three months through September.
"Japan's economy was stable in the initial six months of this year and the latest GDP figures showed that momentum is halted temporarily.
I expect Japan's economy to be back on a moderate recovery trend going forward."
The US administration has recently acknowledged the impact of tariffs on Americans, reducing tariffs on food imports including meat, tomatoes, beverages and bananas amid growing concerns about rising costs.
