The New Animated Series' Introductory Sequence Selected the Wrong Popular RPG Show Song
This latest animated series, the most recent animated series by Critical Role, revealed an exciting introductory sequence. It showcases our favorite group of outcasts, misfits, and criminals kicking ass and making their mark, while also hinting at several agonizing personal histories for characters including the voice actor's mage Caleb, and another actor's warlock orc, the character Fjord.
Overall, the opening looks stunning. But I couldn't help feeling that something was missing in the song choice.
The intro employs "Welcome to the Continent", a truly stellar composition created by producer and singer the talented musician. This piece originating from the official score of the same name, the second release released by Critical Role Productions LLC's music division their music brand. It's a wonderful nostalgic option, and I suspect that devotees of the sequel series will appreciate its inclusion.
But for me, The series' opening fails to capture the hype and excitement that accompanied the show's live-play sessions. "Your Turn to Roll", composed by singer-songwriter Jason Charles Miller, became an immediate hit in my view when it was first revealed in that year, and it only got better when co-founder the performer added lyrics to the tune for the series' animated intro in 2018.
Including singing from Ashley Johnson, Laura Bailey, Travis Willingham, as well as the writer, the song was catchy and enjoyable. At the time, I hadn't seen the follow-up series at that point, but this was such an earworm that I still saved it on my device. It's a song that excites you before you start an installment of fantasy hijinks.
The show's opening with "the new song" doesn't strike the same chords for me. It's an impressive composition, but from what I know of the group, I can't help but feel that its tone is a little off.
Of course, Critical Role has stated that the series will have some surprises and variations from the original live sessions. An adjusted mood for its opening appears as one of them.
The Mighty Nein will be released on Prime Video from November 19. If you can't wait until then, or wish to prepare to get to know the personas of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the original episodes are available on the audio platform and the video site.
