Trump Welcomes Loved Ones of Shot National Guard Soldiers to White House
President Donald Trump announced on Sunday that he has invited the relatives of a Guard member fatally shot last week to come to the executive mansion.
He noted that he conversed with her parents and they were “devastated”.
Background on the Devastating Shooting
Soldier Sarah Beckstrom, twenty years old, was lost her life in a attack on last Wednesday in the nation's capital.
Her fellow service member, Staff Sgt Andrew Wolfe, twenty-four years old, continues receiving treatment in grave state.
Vigils across the state have occurred in their honor.
White House Offer
The president said he’s talked about a White House visit for the families of both members of the West Virginia National Guard.
“I stated: ‘When you’re able, because that’s a difficult moment, come to the White House. We’re going to honor her,” Trump addressed the press. “And similarly with Andrew, whether he recovers or not.”
Public Support
Attendees assembled over the weekend at a local school in the state to remember Sarah.
Both she and Wolfe had been serving with the military unit as part of Trump’s national effort to aid policing efforts in DC.
Honoring Sarah Beckstrom
“Sarah was the individual that educators hoped for. She behaved with quiet strength, a bright grin and a positive energy that inspired people around her,” Hankins, the head of Beckstrom’s previous school, told the press. “She was caring, considerate and always eager to help others.”
Funeral plans for Sarah are still being arranged.
Legal Measures and Policy Changes
Authorities have indicted a twenty-nine-year-old Afghan national with a charge of homicide and charges of attempted murder while armed.
The tragedy prompted the Trump administration to suspend asylum applications and halt granting entry permits to possessors of Afghan passports.
Condition of Wolfe
Wolfe, a native of the city, started his military career in early 2019 and is a graduate of his local high school, according to the Associated Press.
He is still undergoing care and is “fighting for his life”, the state’s governor Morrisey mentioned on a news program.
The state’s top lawyer Bondi informed a news show that she also intended to meet with his relatives.
Memory of Beckstrom
Sarah, from Summersville, graduated from Webster County High in mid-2023 and joined the military shortly after, working as a MP with distinction, per the state guard.
“She had a lot of goodness and she absolutely had fortitude,” the governor addressed the crowd at the service. “Though her time lasted far too short, she has left a mark that’s going to last forever.”
