Both ships named Friendship and Tigger Moth departed Isla Mujeres, Mexico on the 20th of March.

A comprehensive search and recovery operation is currently in progress in the Caribbean region for a pair of missing sailboats loaded with aid cargo en route from Mexico to Cuba.

Military Search and Rescue Efforts Launched

The Mexican government has deployed navy personnel and reconnaissance aircraft to locate the Friendship and Tigger Moth, which were transporting no fewer than 9 crew members, as stated by a military release.

The ships had been expected to make landfall in Havana on the early part of the week, but there has been radio silence from them and no official word of their safe arrival, authorities reported.

The Situation of Humanitarian Support to the Nation

The island nation has relied heavily on aid convoys from Mexico over the last several weeks, as the nation grapples with repeated national electricity failures.

"The crews and captains are experienced sailors, and each boat are equipped with proper safety systems and communication devices," an official associated with the mission stated.

The nine crew members are nationals of the United States, Cuba, France, and Poland. Mexican authorities said it has established contact with maritime rescue coordination centres from each country along with their diplomatic representatives.

"Our team is co-operating fully with the officials and are still optimistic in the ability of the crews to make it to Cuba without incident," the spokesperson added.

Earlier Humanitarian Delivery

Earlier in the week, the Cuban government widely celebrated and warmly received another boat that had delivered 14 tonnes of humanitarian aid to the island.

That vessel, nicknamed "a new Granma" after the vessel in which the revolutionary leader came back to Cuba to start the armed struggle in the mid-20th century, brought photovoltaic panels, medicines, formula milk, bicycles and food.

Wider Geopolitical Climate

Volunteers and NGOs have been at the forefront of attempts to ship critical assistance to Cuba starting at the turn of the year, when a fuel embargo on the Communist-run nation came into effect.

The United Nations have since raised alarms about "dire" supply shortages, with over 50k surgical procedures called off in Cuba because of electricity supply constraints.

Foreign policy measures have increased lately, with remarks from various officials emphasizing the delicate state of relations.

In response to certain proposals, a high-ranking Cuban official insisted that "the governance model of Cuba is not up for negotiation."

Accounts suggest that early stages of negotiations had begun, although their present status remains unclear.

The naval forces said it was pledged to using all of the resources at its disposal to find the vessels and secure the safety of the people on board.

As of now, there has been no public statement on the lost ships by the government in Havana.
