Vince Gilligan Reveals He Has an Idea of How The Apple TV+ Show Will Conclude... For Now.

The acclaimed writer-producer never anticipated that the Apple TV+ show would become a cultural phenomenon. “The viewers have been incredible,” he remarks. “I did not foresee the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.”

As the debut season of the acclaimed sci-fi show coming to an end—and Season 2 greenlit and underway—the creative team opened up about the audience reaction and whether it will impact the narrative path of Pluribus.

On the Tremendous Fan Response

Anyone might to get sidetracked by the rampant praise and online debates about Pluribus. Gilligan, however, is making a conscious effort to ignore the noise.

“It feels like constantly eating hot fudge sundaes and being in a state of bliss,” he explains. “It's amazing, but I hear about it through word of mouth, and that's intentional. Not once have I searched for my own name online, nor do I ever want to. It's quite the opposite. It's a deep trap I know I would get lost in and then I'd be never leaving the house from Home Depot and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.”

Despite Gilligan’s best intentions, there’s no escaping the overwhelmingly positive response to the series. The best he and his team can do is to take it in stride and try not to let it dictate the story of the show.

“It is not our goal to change the plot,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not impacted by what people are saying.”

“It's wiser to keep our focus on the work,” Gilligan adds.

The Central Mystery: Has the showrunner See the Conclusion of Pluribus?

So if Gilligan and his team aren't taking cues by public opinion, does that mean they have already decided how Pluribus will reach its endpoint? The answer is yes… in a way.

“We have some interesting ideas about how the story could conclude,” Gilligan reveals. “but we are always ready to discard a solid concept for a superior concept. That has held us in good stead on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We change course when we conceive of something superior and I suspect we'll be doing that.”

Alternatively, if they hit a wall, Gordon Smith has a humorous idea to use as a backup.

“I keep pitching that the entire story is inside a snow globe, and that we'll pull back at the end and the characters are inside it,” Smith quips, “but nobody's taking me up on that.”

Alternatively, why not reference the iconic TV endings?

“I'd love for Carol to open her eyes next to Bob Newhart,” Gilligan adds, smiling.

Pluribus can be watched on Apple TV+.
